What is motor neurone disease home care?

MND is a progressive condition that affects the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord. This disruption causes a loss of control over movements, making walking, talking, swallowing and even breathing difficult. The condition affects roughly 5,000 adults in the UK, all of whom have to learn to adapt to the ever-changing challenges of a progressive disease.

At Ashridge Home Care, we support individuals impacted by MND, supporting them and their families through this physically and mentally challenging condition. Our MND carers are specially trained to help manage the complexities of this condition, providing physical and emotional support throughout the different stages of an MND diagnosis.

    Our MND at-home care includes:

What are the benefits of receiving MND care at home?

Receiving MND care at home can give your family the space and privacy to process an MND diagnosis, whilst still ensuring that you receive quality, specialist support. We understand how important it is to maintain as much independence as possible during the progression of MND, so our carers work according to your schedule and preferences, offering support where it’s needed so that you can keep doing the things you enjoy.

As well as prioritising your independence, receiving MND care at home allows you to stay in familiar surroundings, surrounded by your family, friends, pets and years of fond memories. At-home care with Ashridge Home Care means that you’ll be guaranteed quality, one-to-one care, with a carer who understands your needs and can act as a trusted companion.

When might motor neurone disease care be required?

Due to the progressive nature of MND, the level of care you need will likely change as the disease develops. MND care is generally recommended in a number of scenarios:

    • If daily tasks such as dressing, eating or navigating the house are becoming difficult to manage independently
    • If you’re struggling to manage your pain levels and/or need support managing and taking your medication.
    • If your quality of life is being impacted by your diagnosis, making it more difficult to socialise and spend time with loved ones.

Everyone’s journey with MND is different, and the level of care required is likely to change as the disease progresses. Hourly care may be the best option for your family during the early stages of MND, whilst live-in care can offer 24/7 support when the disease progresses.

Specialist palliative care for motor neurone disease

Those living with MND may require palliative care as the disease worsens. At home palliative care focuses on the management of symptoms, ensuring that you or your loved one are comfortable and can focus on making lasting memories.

Through Ashridge Home Care’s MND care services, you’ll be able to discuss your options with your care manager as your symptoms progress, with your family’s carer offering both physical and emotional support.

Is home care a better alternative to residential care for people living with MND?

Choosing which care works best for you and your family is an important decision. At-home care and residential care are the options you are most likely to consider, but how do they compare?

    24/7 care support

Stay in the comfort of your home

Stay with your partner and all your possessions

    No accommodation fees

Flexibility to choose between hourly visits or 24/7 care

Ashridge provided an emergency placement for me when I needed a live-in carer on 24hrs notice. This was a godsend to me as my mother had advanced Alzheimer’s and my Dad had been rushed into hospital. I really appreciated the professional approach from all the staff I dealt with and felt very supported. Ashridge found me a first class carer who was able to provide wonderful live-in care for both my parents allowing them to spend a few more months together in their home of 35 years. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ashridge and live-in care.
